2002 Canadian Mixed starts Saturday in Halifax

The 2002 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, the first event in
curling's Season of Champions, gets underway this Saturday at the
Mayflower Curling Club in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Twelve teams, representing the 10 provinces plus entries from
Northern Ontario and Yukon/Northwest Territories, are set to compete
in this 39th Mixed. At the conclusion of the round robin and any
required tie-breakers to determine the first four finishers, the Page
Playoff system will be used (1 vs 2, winner to final, loser to
semi-final; 3 vs 4, winner to semi-final, loser eliminated). TSN
will televise both the semi-final and final live on Sunday, January
13.

It will be only the second time that Nova Scotia has staged The Mixed
since the competition began in 1964 in Toronto. In 1977, the
Mayflower also hosted this Canadian championship. The province has
won the Mixed on four occasions (1993, 1995, 1998 and 1999), the last
by skip Paul Flemming and his Mayflower teammates when it was held in
Victoria, B.C. Last year in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, Quebec's
Jean-Michel Ménard won his province's first Mixed title, defeating
Nova Scotia in the final. Saskatchewan has won a record eight Mixed
crowns.

Among the skips competing are Nova Scotia's Mark Dacey, runner-up at
last year's Canadian Mixed, Prince Edward Island's John Likely,
making a record-setting eighth Mixed appearance and Saskatchewan's
Gerald Shymko, third place finisher at the 1999 Labatt Brier in
Edmonton. Other skips are Alberta's Ken Hunka, British Columbia's
Craig Lepine, Manitoba's Arnold Asham, Wade Blanchard of New
Brunswick, Ken Peddigrew of Newfoundland, Northern Ontario's David
MacInnes, Ontario's Wayne Tuck Jr., Quebec's Daniel Grégoire and Doug
Bothamley, representing the Yukon/Northwest Territories.
