COUNTDOWN IS ON TO THE 2001 SCOTT TOURNAMENT OF HEARTS
The 2001 Scott Tournament of Hearts will open on Saturday at 1:30
p.m. (ET) with live television coverage throughout the week on TSN
and the final game on CBC. Team Canada's Kelly Law will face eleven
other teams in a round robin competition with the top four teams
proceeding to the playoff round.
Nova Scotia's Colleen Jones, two-time Canadian Champion, is making
her fifteenth appearance at the Canadian Women's Curling Championship
and New Brunswick's Kathy Floyd is back for the tenth time. Half of
the competitors at this year's Scott Tournament of Hearts have made
previous appearances.
Four of the competing teams have already qualified for the Olympic
Trials in Regina in December; Kelly Law, Colleen Jones, Sherry
Middaugh from Ontario, and Saskatchewan's Michelle Ridgway. Possibly,
the fifth place finisher in this event could gain a coveted Olympic
Trial berth. In 1997 in Vancouver, Ontario's Alison Goring
finished second to Sandara Schmirler but captured the Trial spot.
February 17th has been officially proclaimed "Sandra Schmirler Day"
by the City of Greater Sudbury. The 2001 Scott Tournament of Hearts
marks the 20th Anniversary Scott Paper's sponsorship of women's
curling. Scott has invited all of the skips from the past twenty
years to join them in Sudbury. Sandra's team - three time Scott
Tournament of Hearts winners will be represented by Jan Betker.
The semi-final game on Saturday, February 24th will be broadcast on
TSN at 7:30 p.m. (ET) and the final game on Sunday, February 25th
will be shown live on CBC at 1:30 p.m. (ET).
