2001 KARCHER JUNIORS SET FOR ST. CATHARINES
January 18, 2001...The 2001 Karcher Canadian junior men's and women's
curling championships will be played February 3-11 at the St.
Catharines Golf & Country Club in St Catharines, Ontario.
Thirteen men's and 13 women's teams, each representing a province
plus separate entries for Northern Ontario, Yukon and Northwest
Territories, will compete, with round robin games at the club and
nearby Jack Gatecliff Arena. At the conclusion of the round robin
and any tie-breakers, the first place teams advance to their
respective finals Saturday and Sunday at St. Catharines Golf and
Country Club, while the second and third place teams meet in
semi-finals Friday night at Jack Gatecliff Arena.
The Karcher junior men's final will be played Saturday, February 10
at 1:30 pm ET while the women's final will take place Sunday,
February 11, also at 1:30 pm ET. Both games will be televised live
by CBC-TV. The winning teams will then represent Canada at the world
junior curling championships, March 15-25 in Ogden, Utah.
The junior men's field is headed by Newfoundland's Brad Gushue, who
lost last year's Karcher Junior final in Moncton to British
Columbia's Brad Kuhn in an extra end. He'll be trying to win a first
junior men's title for his province.
The junior women's lineup includes Saskatchewan's Stefanie Miller,
who won last year's Karcher Juniors in Moncton and was runner-up to
Sweden in the world junior final in Geising, Germany. Prince Edward
Island's Suzanne Gaudet, who lost the Karcher final to Miller last
year, is also returning.
The junior men's championship began in 1950 in Quebec City. Alberta
has won a record 13 times, while Ontario has captured eight titles,
the last being John Morris of Ottawa in 1999. The junior women's
inaugural championship was held in 1971 in Vancouver. Saskatchewan
has won a leading eight crowns. Ontario has won it twice, the latest
by Kim Gellard in 1993. The Canadian junior men's and women's
championships were conducted as separate events until being combined
in 1987 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.
